Racing through the Atlas Mountains

This month, Katie-Jane L'Herpiniere set off to compete in the second edition of the gruelling Atlas Mountain Race.

The AMR is a single-stage, unsupported cycle race from Marrakech to Essaouira. Cycling 1,200km through Morocco's rocky landscape, competitors can expect to climb around 24,000m over challenging terrain, including gravel tracks and old colonial roads. The route was designed by the founder of the Silk Road Mountain Race, Nelson Trees.

Katie is racing in a pair with fellow female rider, Nienke Oostra.

The best decision in my packing was the 8 Firepot meals I packed. Worth their weight in gold with such limited resupply options. They saved me from yet more omelettes, but also meant I could avoid eating all the wafers and sweet biscuit stuff, which for me always results in a mouthful of ulcers.
